Summer Enrichment Chemistry Workshop
This program will be facilitated on-campus.
The Summer Enrichment Chemistry Workshop (SECW) is a six-week intensive engagement focusing on foundational skills needed to succeed in Matter and Energy (Chem 122) or Comprehensive General and Organic Chemistry (Chem 115). The workshop will emphasize understanding chemical vocabulary and concepts and then combining these concepts with basic math skills to solve a variety of problems. Topics such as metric units, proportional reasoning, the mole concept, chemical stoichiometry, solutions, gases, and chemical reactions will be explored. Students who successfully complete this workshop will be eligible for a revised placement into Chem 122 or Chem 115 (for declared pre-nursing students). All workshop students will become familiar with online homework programs and electronic resources used in Chemistry at UIC.
Please note: In-person attendance is required. There are a total of 12 meetings. We allow no more than two missed classes. All classes are three hours in length where substantial information, problem solving and learning strategies for success will be covered in each session.
All students are required to take a common exam from 10 AM - 12 PM on Friday, August 1st.
