Critical Thinking for College Success

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Whether you want to tell when politicians are making sense and when they are not, win arguments with your friends about music, sports, or restaurants, or just want to write clearer papers and succeed in your courses, “Critical Thinking for College Success” is for you. Critical thinking skills help you evaluate conflicting claims. They help you distinguish between sound reasoning and empty rhetoric. They can help you formulate strong arguments in support of your beliefs and enable you to effectively express your views in conversation and in writing. They can help you become an independent and creative thinker. Studies show that students who study critical thinking have more success in college and score higher on standardized tests like the LSAT, GMAT and GRE. Employers generally list critical thinking skills as the trait they most look for in new employees. The one-day intensive event is one of the best preparations for a successful first-year in college. In this event, students: 1) will be introduced to several key critical thinking concepts and techniques 2) will apply those techniques to important questions, and 3) will learn how to confidently interact with their classmates and teachers in lively and productive discussions.
