Summer Enrichment Writing Workshop

The Summer Enrichment Writing Workshop (SEWW) is available to ALL incoming first-year students who would like to sharpen their writing skills before coming to UIC in the fall. The completion of your Intent to Enroll (ITE) is the only prerequisite for registering for this 6-week summer session.

Offered in both on-campus and online formats (Tuesdays & Thursdays 9am-12pm OR 2pm-5pm), SEWW gives students the opportunity to write projects in two different genres; brush up on their grammar, note-taking, critical reading, and study skills; and learn about the drafting and revising process that is crucial to success not only in UIC’s required First-Year Writing sequence (ENGL 160 and ENGL 161) but also for writing-focused general education coursework at the university.

PROGRAM DATES

June 24, 2025, to July 31, 2025

PROGRAM DAYS: Tuesday and Thursday
Select from one of the following times:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

WHO SHOULD REGISTER?
This FREE workshop is strongly recommended for:

  • First-year students who place into ENGL 060, ENGL150, ENGL 151, or ENGL 159* who would like to be considered for revised placement.
  • First-year students who place into ENGL 160 & would like a refresher on critical reading and argumentative writing skills after taking a break from English coursework in their senior year of high school.
  • International students who will be attending their first semester at UIC in Fall 2024 who are interested in practice in writing in genres not taught in their previous education.

*Students who place into ENGL 060, ENGL 150, ENGL 151, or ENGL 159 after taking the FYWP placement exam will be given first priority in claiming a seat in the workshop as well as have the opportunity to petition for a higher course placement through a writing portfolio process at the end of the workshop.

The advantage of taking SEWW for ALL participants will be getting to know your instructors, gaining experience in the writing you'll be doing in your first year, and getting familiar with UIC so you'll begin the fall semester fully equipped to succeed!
